Choose mods by goal
Use mods to solve a real problem: building limitations, inventory friction, UI information or replay variety. Do not install a large bundle just because it is popular.
Back up before patching
Survival games update systems that mods hook into. A working setup can break after a patch, so keep save backups and note what was installed.
Multiplayer considerations
If a mod changes gameplay, every player may need compatible files or versions. Test a modded multiplayer setup before committing a long-running world to it.
Keep the stack understandable
When something breaks, you should be able to isolate the cause. Add mods in small batches and remove abandoned ones before they become a permanent dependency.
